Thank you for your interest in Volunteering! We need you!
An estimated 88K Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) in Philadelphia alone are eligible to naturalize, but have not yet taken the necessary steps because many immigrants are of low income and unable to afford full cost of application; they lack of awareness about of availability of naturalization fee waivers; they lack access to culturally competent, affordable and conveniently located immigration services; and because many of them lack the required level of English language proficiency.
Citizenship Day is a collaborative effort to scale up naturalization numbers in Pennsylvania. Supporting the naturalization of LPRs is a sound investment. LPRs that naturalize can increase their earnings by 8-10% with significant benefits accruing to the city’s economy (Manuel Pastor, Citizen Gain: The Economic Benefits of Naturalization for Immigrants and the Economy, 2012.). Similarly, the increased income would contribute new taxes, and its multiplier would add to the city’s GDP.
